Yoga & Mindfulness Meditation

Halcyon YogaJacquelyn Cooper from Halcyon Yoga has recently been invited to write about how yoga and meditation are good for your health for inclusion in a book by Professor Rob Thomas, entitled “Lifestyle and Cancer – The Facts”. Professor Thomas is a consultant oncologist at the Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital, whose Research and Education Fund is the year’s President’s charity and he recently spoke at the Bedfordshire BusinessWomen’s January network, “Here Come The Boys”.

Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation

Yoga has been around for thousands of years and those who practice it today know its positive effects and how well it can make you feel.

Yoga is a complete system of practices which allows us to reconnect with our whole being via mindful movement. It is simple and effective and can be extremely enjoyable. The progressive and accessible practices facilitate the body to re-balance and rejuvenate. Continue reading

Blogging for Bedfordshire Businesses

Paul Hutchinson, Black Letter PRGuest post by Paul Hutchinson

I’m delighted to have been invited along to host a Bedfordshire BusinessWomen workshop on blogging.

Blogs are a strange beast. Ask around and you’re likely to get responses ranging from those who can’t wait to show you the latest blog post on talking cats, to others who are convinced blogging is dead and it has no future.

The latter response has actually been bandied about for some time and still rears its negative head from time to time as, quite ironically, bloggers try to mix it up a little in the hope it’ll drive more readers to their own blog. Continue reading

“Here Come The Boys” Charity Dinner & Networking Event

Last Thursday’s event was my first experience of a BBW event and the evening completely exceeded all my expectations.

 BBW Jan event

Held at the Bedford Blues Rugby Club on Goldington Road, the marquee was beautifully dressed as you can see from the picture, with the most amazing table decorations prepared by Creations Flowers in keeping with the healthy work/life balance topic of the evening.

There was time before the meal to network and I must say I was really impressed with the number and variety of businesses represented.

130 people in total attended and I was lucky enough to be sat next to guest speaker, Professor Rob Thomas – Consultant Oncologist at Bedford Hospital for the healthy and gorgeous-tasting meal (I had chicken tagine!).

Introduced by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and Bedfordshire Business Ambassador, Helen Nellis, Prof. Thomas gave a truly enlightening presentation about the positive effects exercise and healthy eating can have in both preventing cancer and minimising the risks of relapse once diagnosed. It was a real eye-opener as Prof. Thomas explained his research over many years had revealed certain food types proven to help the fight against cancer.

As a result of his research, Pomi-T ®, a whole food supplement, has been scientifically tested and initially trialled on male prostate cancer sufferers with significant results.

 Prof Thomas speech

Despite the serious topic, the atmosphere at the event was fun and light-hearted and everyone enjoyed themselves. I had a wonderful time and made some great new contacts.

Above all, I was really proud to be part of the BBW team (and now also a committee member – see our “jazz hands” picture!!) and to have raised so much money for the Primrose Research & Education Fund at Bedford Hospital. Over £1000 was raised from the raffle on the night and in total about £1500 from raffles since Emma Garrett became BBW President and chose the Primrose Unit as her charity for the year.
